  Stuart served with the 2nd Machine Gun Squadron, 6th Australian Lighthorse in the Middle East Desert Campaign during WWI. When he returned to civilian life he commenced farming. His property known as Laloma was situated between Lockwood and Cargo on the Cargo Road. After a few short years he sold the farm and moved to Sydney with their two children.
